Knowledge Management Coordinator

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Knowledge Management Coordinator to support the implementation of the Abidjan Convention’s marine and coastal resilience initiatives. Based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the role will facilitate knowledge exchange, monitor environmental trends, and assist Contracting Parties in applying Convention protocols over a 12‑month consultancy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead formulation and implementation of regional initiatives on marine and coastal resilience, including mangrove management and integrated coastal zone management.
• Promote harmonisation among Contracting Parties through joint initiatives, regional standards and mechanisms addressing land‑based and marine pollution.
• Guide restoration and conservation programmes for mangroves, lagoons, estuaries and other critical habitats.
• Develop best‑practice resources and organise regional workshops, technical trainings and peer‑learning platforms.
• Monitor regional environmental trends, provide analyses, policy guidance and early‑warning insights.
• Strengthen partnerships with UN agencies, regional fisheries bodies, research institutions and development partners.
• Prepare high‑quality technical documents such as project proposals, implementation guidelines, progress reports and policy briefs.
• Support Contracting Parties in reporting on the Abidjan Convention’s protocols and action plans.
• Contribute to strategic and operational planning of the Secretariat, including work plans and performance reporting.
• Engage stakeholders and decision‑makers on transboundary and regional environmental issues.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in environmental science, marine studies, or a related field.
• Proven experience in knowledge management, coordination of regional environmental programmes, and stakeholder engagement.
• Strong analytical, writing and reporting skills.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of French is an asset.
• Familiarity with the Abidjan Convention and its protocols is desirable.
