Legal Counsel - Africa

About the role

Thunes is seeking a Legal Counsel to support its African operations. The role will work closely with the Vice President Legal, General Counsel and Chief Legal & Compliance Officer, providing legal advice in English and French for the company’s regulated payment services across the continent.

Key responsibilities

• Act as a core member of Thunes’ legal team, liaising with other departments to anticipate and address their legal needs.
• Provide pragmatic, legally sound guidance to cross‑functional stakeholders on commercial contracts, product development, payments, sales and marketing activities.
• Draft, review and negotiate contracts with network partners and customers throughout Africa.
• Ensure full compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements, including payment data protection and licensing obligations (payment institution, money remittance, etc.).
• Assist in acquiring and maintaining the licences required for Thunes’ global payment services.
• Take responsibility for substantive legal issues as they arise, delivering timely and accurate advice.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with a strong background in fintech, payments or financial services regulation.
• Fluent in English and French, both written and spoken.
• Highly motivated self‑starter able to thrive in a fast‑paced environment, working independently and as part of a team.
• Proven experience advising on commercial contracts and regulatory compliance.
