Senior Accountant (Construction)

About the role

The Senior Accountant manages the company's financial transactions with a strong focus on construction project accounting, cost control and contract financial management. The role ensures accurate financial reporting, monitors project costs and profitability, oversees day-to-day accounting operations, tracks project budgets, reconciles accounts and mentors accounting staff.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and maintain the general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
• Track project profitability, work-in-progress (WIP) and job costing, and monitor revenue recognition under percentage-of-completion or completed-contract methods.
• Assist in project budgeting and forecasting, monitor budgets versus actual costs, and analyse construction costs (materials, labour, subcontractors).
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations and construction-specific financial practices, and review contracts, subcontractor agreements and billing terms.
• Support internal and external audits, including project audits, and ensure proper documentation for progress billing, retention and change orders.
• Review project cost reports, guide the team on construction accounting practices and promote knowledge sharing.
• Prepare financial and project performance reports for management, maintain records of contracts, invoices and cost reports, assist with cash flow forecasting and provide ad-hoc financial analysis.

Required profile

• 5-8 years of experience in accounting, preferably in the construction or contracting industry.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field; CPA or ACCA is a plus.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting and construction revenue recognition methods.
• Familiarity with construction contracts and cost structures.
• Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. ERP systems) and advanced Excel skills.
