Environmental Policy Intern

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking an Environmental Policy Intern to support its Ecosystems Division and the Secretariat of the Abidjan Convention. Based in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, the intern will contribute to research, analysis, and policy development on marine and coastal issues affecting the south‑eastern Atlantic region.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research and analysis on marine and coastal policy topics such as pollution, biodiversity, climate impacts, and the blue economy.
• Monitor global and regional developments in ocean governance and multilateral environmental agreements.
• Prepare short policy briefs and summaries that highlight key trends and priorities.
• Support the development of projects and initiatives by drafting concept notes and proposals.
• Compile background information and technical inputs for project design and partner consultations.
• Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and materials for meetings and workshops.
• Monitor project implementation and contribute to progress reporting.
• Prepare briefing materials and coordinate inputs for stakeholder engagement.
• Contribute to documentation and knowledge management.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Programme Officer.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a university program in environmental studies, policy, marine science, or a related field.
• Strong analytical, research, and written communication skills in English.
• Interest in marine and coastal environmental policy and the blue economy.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural team.
• Proficiency with standard office software for drafting reports and presentations.
