Senior Environmental Specialist – Safeguards

About the role

The World Bank is seeking a Senior Environmental Specialist to lead safeguards and environmental risk management for its portfolio of projects in West and Central Africa, based in Côte d'Ivoire. The role supports the implementation of the Environment and Social Framework (ESF) and ensures that project investments protect people and the environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance on environmental and social safeguards for a portfolio of over 300 projects worth more than $44 billion.
• Lead the preparation, review, and monitoring of environmental impact assessments, mitigation plans, and compliance reports.
• Facilitate stakeholder engagement, public participation, and grievance redress mechanisms in line with ESF requirements.
• Collaborate with project teams, government agencies, and development partners to integrate sustainability standards.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing and capacity building across the Western and Central Africa region.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in environmental science, natural resources, or a related field.
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in environmental and social risk management, preferably in international development.
• Demonstrated experience with the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework or similar standards.
• Fluency in English and French.
• Ability to work in Côte d'Ivoire and travel across the region.
